______________________________________________________________________________________ INVITATION AND MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to inform you that the 5 th International Symposium on Tropical and Subtropical Fruits will be held in Guangzhou, China from 18 – 20 June 2012. This symposium is jointly organized by the Fruit Tree Research Institute, GDAAS, Guangzhou, China, International Tropical Fruits Network (TFNet), International Society for Horticultural Sciences, Hunan Agricultural University and Guangdong Fruit Association. The symposium is a follow up of the last successful one held in Bogor, Indonesia in 2008. It is also timely taking into consideration of the recent developments in research and development in the various fields, and the need for information sharing among stakeholders involved in the tropical and subtropical fruit industry.
The organizing committee is now preparing to ensure that the symposium will be an exciting and successful event for all participants.
Please reserve the dates of 18 – 20 June 2012 in your forward agenda to avoid missing this important event. The organizing committee will update you on the relevant information regarding the symposium over the next year.

The symposium will be held in Guangzhou (Canton), the capital city of Guangdong Province, which has a population of 11 million. With a history of 2,500 year, Guangzhou is one of the most vibrant cities in China with rich traditions and culture. Guangzhou is also a dynamic commercial and financial sector with numerous enterprises and industrial parks.
Agriculturally, Guangdong Province is the main tropical fruit producing area in the country. The Jiangnan fruit market is also the largest fruit wholesale market in China. Besides this, the National banana and litchi and huangpi germplasm centers are located at the Fruit Tree Research Institute of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
